3a. George Arnold (1858-1918)

George Arnold was the 9th child of Charles and Lucretia. He also had a twin sister who didn't survive infancy. They were born 30 May 1858 in Calhoun County. He married Lucinda Hall (b abt 1869), a daughter of Robert M. Hall and Sarah, sister to Elizabeth Jane Hall (wife of Simon Arnold.)

1900 census Calhoun County, George and Lucinda have had 6 children, 5 surviving. In the household is "brother in law" James E. Siers, along with nieces Flossie and Eva Siers.

1910 Census Lucinda has died. George with 5 children in the home. Maude A, is not found at home, but John Wesley was born in 1901.

George died June 1918 of tuberculosis.

  5. Maud Artimissa 25 April 1899
  6. John Wesley b. 11 July 1901 m Alice (Fulks) Lamb d. 26 Dec 1992
* There is a birth record for a daughter to George and Lucinda named Julia born 4 Jun 1897 in Eden, Calhoun County, and there is a request for a birth certificate for Janet; born 2 Jun 1897. I believe they are the same child and somewhere the dates were mixed up. It wasn't uncommon for the birth record to have a different, but similar name than what the child went by. Maybe the parents were misunderstood when the record was taken, or they changed their minds and didn't bother with the legality of changing the name. Whatever the case, it seems to happen more often in this time period than would now. The birth record for Julia states she was the 5th birth for Lucinda. This falls in line with the 1900 census record of 6 births, 5 surviving.

3a./3s James Arnold (1851-1893) and Francena Siers (1851-1944)

James Arnold is the son of Charles and Lucretia Arnold, he was born about 1851. He married Francena Siers, daughter of Isaac and Isabel Siers, and sister to Sarah Angeline. on Dec 2, 1872 in Braxton County, West Virginia. She was born May 7, 1851 in Braxton County.

The 1880 Census is the only census with the couple together. They are in Calhoun County, along with their 3 oldest children.

findagrave.com cites James death date as May 30, 1893 and his final resting place as Walnut Cemetery in Calhoun County. I am unable to find a death record for him other than this.

1900 census Francena is the head of household, she is living with 6 of her 7 surviving children. This census says she has birthed 9 children, and 7 are surviving. (But in the 1910 census the numbers are 10 children birthed and 6 surviving.) Julia has married and moved from her mothers home.

1910 census Francena has only 2 children still living with her,  I am unable to find records for Charlie/Berman after the 1900 census. I believe he may have been the child that has passed away. I don't believe she had another pregnancy, I think she may have in her advanced age, miscounted her births, but knew she only had 6 children alive now. Later this year, James will marry Susie King.

1920 census with James and Susie as the head of the household. Susie has had at least one daughter with James, Bonnie.

1930 census with Albert as the head of the household. His family consists of Lydia Boon, who he married in 1900. *Interesting side fact, Albert and Lydia initially applied for a marriage license in 1897, there is a license date, but no minister's return. They didn't get married. 3 years later, in 1900, they applied again and this time, were married. If you know why they didn't go through with it the first time, please comment. Family Lore is great to add to the information gathered.* And their children... Roy, Lacey and Charles

1940 census with James and Susie. This will be the last census we can find her in as she died in Jan of 1944 according to her death record.

3a. Simon Arnold (1862-1951)

Simon Arnold was a brother to William Arnold, sons of Charles and Lucretia. He was born 12 May 1862 in Gilmer County, before the line was redrawn into Calhoun County. On April 29, 1888 he married the daughter of Robert and Sarah Hall, Elizabeth Jane in Calhoun County. Her sister, Lucinda married Simon's brother George. Simon and Elizabeth had at least 4 sons, and she died, before 1899. Simon remarries Nancy Jane Ellison, daughter of Nathan Ellison and widow to Manuel Ellison, in July of 1899.

In June of 1900, during the census, we find them in Washington District, Calhoun County, West Virginia. This record states that Nancy has given birth to 2 children and 2 are surviving. Losie is the first child born after the marriage to Simon, so she would be the second child. There is a birth record for an Edna Elleson in Calhoun County in 1895. But she is not in the home with her mother. (I believe she is living here with her maternal grandparents and answering to the name Stella.) Nancy and Simon are neighbors to Simon's sister and brother in law,  Nancy and Isaac Siers.

1910 Census Says that Nancy has given birth to 5 children and 5 are alive. There are 7 children in the house (the 2 youngest, Opal {1911} and Geraldine {1914} have not been born yet.) On the records for the 4 oldest boys (Charles, Robert, Leslie and Wood) they state their mother as "Jane Hall" (Elizabeth Jane.) That leaves 3 children in the home born to Nancy (Losie, Nathan, and Everett) plus the daughter she had with Manuel (who I can not find in this census record) gives us 4 children total. Who and where is this extra child? Is it an enumerator mistake?

1920 Census again, Nancy and Isaac are found as neighbors. They are still owning and operating a farm at this time. Opal and Geraldine are listed on this census.

1930 Census Living still in Calhoun County, with Everett, Opal, and Geraldine at home. Also in the home are 2 grandchildren, they are enumerated as Arnolds, but are Bailey children. They are children of Losie who died in 1929, most likely as a complication to childbirth, as if you look on the record, the line under hers is for a son, Bernard Jr. He was 3 months and 5 days old. Gladys and Chesley Bailey were raised by their grandparents after their mother's death.

1940 Census with the same children living in the home.

According to his death certificate, Simon died in December 1951, Nancy died in Nov 1958 in Wood County.

3a. Harriet Jane Arnold (1842-1894

Harriet is an older sister to William Arnold, the first daughter of Charles and Lucretia Arnold. She was born in 1842 according to her death certificate. Married Charles M. Siers (b. June 7, 1846), the son of Reuben Siers and Sarah Dane on November 16, 1870. And she died on 16 August 1894.

Since she died before the 1900 census, she is only found in the 1880 census as the wife of Charles Siers. At this time, she had given birth to 3 sons. (She is found in the 1870 census in her father's home.)

If we continue to follow Charles M, he marries again in March of 1895. And we find him with his new wife and their 3 year old son, along with older sons Josiah and Charles C, in the 1900 census.

Charles M. Siers died in August of 1924.

  1. James E. b. about 1872

3a./3s. Nancy Roanna Arnold (1856-1921) and Isaac Franklin Siers (1842-1926)

Nancy Roanna Arnold is the daughter to Lucretia Nichols and Charles Arnold, a younger sister to William Arnold. Born 27 May 1856 in Calhoun County, Virginia. Like two of her siblings, she married a child of Isaac Siers. She married his son Isaac Franklin Siers, brother to Sarah Angeline Siers. They were married in Calhoun County, WV on May 22, 1880

Since the 1890 census was destroyed many years ago, the first census we could find them in is the 1900 Census, and they are living in the Washington District of Calhoun County. It states that Nancy has given birth to 9 children, and all 9 are surviving.

For some reason, they were not enumerated in 1910, in 1900 they are a neighbor to her brother and his second wife, Simon and Nancy J Arnold and family, in the 1920  Census, they are still neighbors to Simon and Nancy, but in the 1910, the household is skipped and the Westley's are the next home enumerated.

According to findagrave.com Nancy died in October of 1921, but I can not find a death record for it. Isaac died a widower in Braxton County in 1926.

Some of their children included:

  1. William Harrison b 1881
  2. Clay b. June 1882
  3. Simon b. 1884
  4. Amy b. Mar 1885
  5. Arminda b. May 1887
  6. Matildab. Jul 1888
  7. Lucinda b. 1892
  8. Clarence Justice b. 1896
  9. John Earl b. 1898

9. Thomas Arnold (1649-1726)

Thomas Arnold, the son of unknown parentage, was born about 1649. He married Grace Doyle. She was the daughter of John Doyle and Mary, she was born about 1663 in Va. According to werelate.com Thomas married Grace around 1679. She died in 1732 in King George County. Thomas's estate was settled in May of 1726, also in King George County.

It is believed that he is one of the first Arnold's in Virginia, transplanted here around 1662. At this time, I can not with certainty say where he was born. I am unable to find a record of birth for him to even indicate if he was born here, in a new colony; or if he was actually born in a Mother Country, and traveled here at an early age. Many researchers believe Thomas had a brother named James, but I am unable to confirm. These are the records I can find....

Mention of his already established property line around 1677...
