5 James Arnold Jr. (1771-1828)

Digitized records of the Arnold family are scarce at this point. Most of the information going back from this point will be information I've gained through private family histories and the Arnold Family Association of the South, which is a periodical chronicling the Arnold families (Yes, I've read the WHOLE THING,) IF digitized records are available, I will continue to link.

James Jr was the son of James Arnold Sr, mother unknown. I am unsure at this point if he was born in King George County or Spotsylvania County, Virginia. or possibly Harrison county; but he was born about 1771.  I do know he moved to Harrison County and lived his life there, presumably dying there. He married Mary Davisson (born about 1765 in New Jersey), who is the daughter of Obadiah Davisson in Harrison County, Virginia on 13 January. 1791. 

I came across a tax list for Harrison County in 1801. We know that Charles was born in Harrison County in 1802, so it stands to reason that this is the home of James Jr and Mary. A bit more digging and I found him in these Land Records in Harrison County.

1810 census Harrison County, Va. shows Mary and James have 4 sons, 3 under 10, one between 16-26, and 4 daughters. Three under the age of 10, and one under 16.

1820 Census shows us James is still in Harrison County, and has quite the household. 3 male children under the age of 10; 2 males between the ages of 16-18; one male between the ages of 19 and 26, and a male over 45 (presumably James Jr.) There are also 5 females under the age of 16, with one woman aged between 26 and 45 (presumably Mary.) If we read a few lines down, there is another James Arnold listed, and I'm comfortable assuming that this is James W, the son of James Jr.

It is believed James Jr died before May 27, 1828. And in the 1830 Census, we find Mary living in the Eastern District of Harrison County. There are 5 children under 20 living at home. I do not know who these children are at this time, but I will try to find out.

I haven't been able to find records of either's death, other than mention of 1828 in the AFAS collection for James Jr.

6. James Arnold Sr. (1732-??)

James Sr. was born about 1732 to Isaac Jr and Sarah Arnold, in most likely King George County, Virginia. Unfortunately I can not find a marriage record for him, so his wife is unknown. Some suggest that James Sr married a woman named Sarah.  But, there were at least 3 sons named James in each generation during this time period. (Half of which married a woman named Sarah)

I have found a book (pg 35) transcribing the 1782 Census that lists a household for a James Arnold in Monongalia County. (This county is restructured many times, and is the mother county of Harrison.) In the home is only 2 people. I believe it is James Sr and possibly James Jr.

There isn't much in the way of records for James Sr. I don't even have a time period for his death, but I am guessing it was in Harrison County.

The known children to James (Sr)

1. George (1765) married Elizabeth Roanna Prunty in Harrison County, 1789. 
2. Simon (1768-1854) married Prudence Webb in 1805; Harrison County. 
3. John (1770-1811) married Jemimah Jackson Harrison County, 1792

5. George Sandal (??-??)

George married Elizabeth Reip around 1827. Elizabeth was born 12 May 1810 and died May 1881. She was the daughter of Peter Reip and Barbara Olinger. At this time there is limited knowledge of George Sandal. There have been many different spellings of the name, and I think that is a contributing factor.

Levin Nicholas, also found as Levi Nichols and combinations of the two,
Married Margaret Mace, daughter of John Mace on November 4, 1800 in Randolph County.

In the 1801 Tax Lists, they are living in Kanawha County

Children of Levin and Margaret:

1. Rebecca (1793-1859) married Daniel McCune
2. Anna (1802- abt 1850) married James Arnold, son of James (Jr) and Mary Arnold
3. Jeremiah (1809) It appears that Jeremiah may have been a Confederate Soldier in the Civil War, will further research at a later date.

4. Alexander Downey (1825-1908)

Alexander was born in April of 1825 in Monongalia County, Virginia. Unfortunately, records are slim and I can not find a birth or marriage record for him or Sarah Jane Brannon, his wife. She was born about 1831 in Kanawha County, Virginia. Little information is found about Sarah, she only shows up in census records and the records of her children. I have found other genealogical information for her parents, this specific tree seems to have relevant supporting facts, But at this time I have not personally checked the facts. No records as of yet to tell me who Alexander's parents are, or where they are from. But the Downey surname is typically Irish.

The 1850 census is the first census we find them in. They are in the 17th District of Gilmer County, Virginia. They have one child.

In scouring land records, I've found Alexander receiving land in Gilmer County. The first in 1853 and the second in 1854.

The 1860 census gives us much more information, this enumerator even took down the counties the individuals of the family were born in. Now we find them in Arnoldsburg, Calhoun County.

The 1870 Census they are in Washington District, Calhoun County West Virginia

The 1880 census they are in Center, Calhoun, WV

1900 census Alexander is shown as a widow and it shows his father was born in Maryland, and his mother was born in Pennsylvania. He is found in Calhoun County still, and his youngest son is living at home, with his wife and children.

His death record has little information other than what can be surmised. He was born about 1824 and died in 1908 in Calhoun County, West Virginia.

Children to Alexander and Sarah Jane:

1. Jeremiah M. Born May 29, 1847 and died in Clay County in 1920. His death record states his mother's maiden name.
2. Sarah Jane married J. W. Jarvis in 1875 she was 23, this puts her birth year around 1852.

4. Loverna Ellen married a Reip and her death record states she was born on or about May 14, 1855 in Calhoun County and died October 1, 1940 in Calhoun County.
5. James B.: According to his death certificate, he was born July 23, 1853 and died Nov 29, 1939.
6. Minnorah  marriage record  married A Rollyson, son of Jack Rollyson in 1881. Death Record says she was born 6 Aug 1862 and died 19 October 1951
7. Eunice Marriage record indicates she was born about 1863. Married J. Spencer Meadows
8. Ulysses Grant Born May 2, 1868 died November 26, 1939 in Calhoun County information found on his death certificate. Married Emma Meadows.

4. Reuben Fulks (1847-between 1880-1900)

Reuben Fulks was born approximately 1847. He was a Confederate soldier in the Civil War. (To request a full record of Reuben's service, follow these steps and use this information.) He was in the 36th Battalion of the Virginia Calvary Company B. When he returned from the War, he was but 18 years old.

Rumor is that Reuben was the second husband to Sarah Elizabeth. But it is rumor that is supported by evidence. At the time of their marriage, in 1865, Sarah Hamrick was already 35, and in her 3rd trimester of pregnancy; the marital status column has been left blank. The only real information that has been gleaned from this record is that Sarah's parents were named George and Sarah (last name not present) and Reuben's mother is named Hannah.

The first census Reuben and Sarah appear together is the 1870 Census, which gives us even more evidence to support the second husband theory. Listed in the home under the last name Fulks, are children who are impossible ages for the union. In 1870, Reuben is listed as age 23, and the oldest child in the home is 15 years old. There are 3 children in the home that are commonly believed to be the children of Reuben.* They resided in Washington, Braxton County.

In the 1880 census they are still in Braxton County, and only the three youngest children are living in the home.

In the 1900 census, we find Sarah living in her daughter Moriah's home. No record of Reuben anywhere.

In 1920, Sarah Elizabeth passed away.According to her death record, her mother's last name was Reip and her father's Sandal and she was born in Pennsylvania.

Other records to support the second marriage theory: Sarah and Benjamin's marriage record for 1846 in Braxton County (gives her maiden name as Sando.) 1850 Census and 1860 Census Records. There were at least 6 children born to Benjamin and Sarah Elizabeth (Sandal):

The children of Reuben Fulks and Sarah Elizabeth Hamrick (Sandal):

1. *Nancy Jane birth record 1865 Braxton County (Due to the timing of this birth, contrary to the information given on the birth record, I don't know if this is actually Reuben's daughter, or the daughter of Benjamin Hamrick. Sarah and Reuben were married in July of 1865 and Nancy Jane was born in August of 1865. For the purposes of records and this genealogy, I will include her as a child of Reuben. Once a death date for Benjamin is come across, I will have a clearer picture of the situation.)

3. Henry William Fulks (1872-??)

Henry William Fulks, also known as William Henry, was born to Reuben Fulks and Sarah on June 7, 1871, in Strangecreek, Braxton County (according to his death certificate)

m. Lydia Downey August 4, 1892 in Calhoun County according to the marriage record I found here. The information provided states Lydia's parents are Alexander J. Downey and Sarah Jane Brannon. Her birth happened in May of 1873.

In the 1900 census, they are found in Otter, Clay, West Virginia. According to this record Lydia has born 4 children, only 3 surviving. At this time, W. H. is a Teamster.

1910 Census shows 3 more surviving children for a total of 6 living /7 total. It also shows that Henry's father has probably passed at this time, because his mother Sarah is living with him.

We find them in Calhoun County in 1920, living in the home of their oldest son, Sherman, who is unmarried. It appears Henry and Lydia have had 2 more daughters at this time.

Lydia died in 1927, Roane County, according to her death certificate, she died of accidental burns.

Birch District, Braxton County is where we find them in the 1930 census. Henry is a farmer, as is Joe.

In the 1940 census we find Henry living in the home of his second son, Dwight.

4. Isaac Siers (1818-1900)

*This is the only marriage producing issue

Isaac is buried here, in Braxton County. According to this information he was born in 1818 and died in 1900. The 1900 census Isaac shows up in was recorded on June 2, 1900. This indicates he died later in the year.

In the 1840 Census record for Union, Monroe, Virginia, Isaac has 1 other person living in the house, a woman aged over 20 and under 30. This is presumably Isabel.

According to Land Grant records, in the 1850's, Isaac received about 150 acres in Braxton County from 2 grants. The first, in 1850 was a parcel of 70 acres. The second, a few years later in '53 was 80 acres. So, for the 1850 census, we know we will find him, Isabel and the 5 oldest children in Braxton County. The youngest, Susan, is what I believe in an enumerator error, and that this is in truth Sarah Angeline, wife to William Arnold.

1860 census shows us the names of 5 more children, for a total of 9 children in the home, 10 borne to the couple. At this time, Julia Ann has been married and moved out. Susan is now listed as Sarah A. They are still in Braxton County.

1870 Census  The most distinct change you'd notice in this census is they are now listed in West Virginia instead of Virginia. Sarah being the eldest child left in the home, and 2 more children in the family, brings the total to 8 in the home, 12 total.

Isabel passed away between 1870 and 1879. A marriage record for a 60 year old widowed Isaac Siers of Monroe Co, married a 26 year old divorced Laverna Santy on the 27 of March 1879 in Calhoun County, WV.

1880 Census shows his second wife has a daughter from her previous marriage, Rosa Lee. She is 8 years old, and at this time not included in this work. Isaac has 4 biological children still in the home, and they are still living in Braxton County, West Virginia

Isaac and Laverna are found in the 1900 census living in Otter, Clay County. It's just the two of them.

1. Julia Ann 1841 m. Thomas Jarvis Jr in Braxton County, on April 20, 1860. This record says she was a single girl of 19, born in Monroe County, and he was a 35 year old widower born in Harrison County, Va.

3a. John Arnold (1844-1927)

John is a brother to William Arnold, sons of Charles Arnold and Lucretia Nichols. He was born the 28 of Sept 1843 in Kanawha County. He married Dianna Hardaway in Calhoun County in 1866.

1870 census John and Dianna living in Calhoun County with oldest son, Charles and an 8 year old boy, Francis Santy (relationship at this time is unknown).

1880 census Calhoun County, house full of children.

1900 census The West Side of Washington District, Calhoun County

1910 Census John and Dianna living in Calhoun County with youngest daughter Arizona.

JOHN ARNOLD

     John Arnold was born September 28, 1843, in that part of Kanawha County, Virginia, which is now included in Calhoun County, West Virginia. His home has, therefore, always been in the locality in which he now resides, and his parents, Charles D. and Lucretia (Nichols) Arnold, were residents here before Calhoun was organized, and he may be reckoned among the pioneers of this section of country.

     The wife of John Arnold was a daughter of George W., and Barbara (Jarvis) Hardway, named Diana, and her birth was on the 10th of February, 1849, also in Kanawha County. Her father died November 27, 1882.

     John Arnold and Diana Hardway were wedded in Calhoun County, July 25, 1866, and their children are six living and one deceased: Charles C., born March 3, 1868, Francis Marion, November 14, 1871; a son not named born February 20, 1873, died March 3, 1873; Rhoda J., September 3, 1875; John P., September 26, 1877; Louisa, December 28, 1880; Arizona, September 27, 1882. 

     John Arnold served three years in Company E., 14th Virginia Cavalry, Confederate army, and was in a number of engagements. He was held a prisoner one year. His occupation is farming, and his address is Eden, Calhoun County, West Virginia.

4. Charles D. Arnold (1802-1881)

Charles D. Arnold was the son of James Arnold Jr and Mary Davisson. He was born in Harrison County, Va in about 1802. He married Lucretia Nichols in 1840. The record shows they were married in Kanawha County. She was the daughter of Levin and Margaret Nichols.

I believe James Sr. died around 1828, and in the 1830 census, we can find James W, - Charles's brother as the head of household for a home with only 3 men aged 26-45 in Kanawha County. It is my belief that this is a home of brothers. James, Charles and a younger brother living together. We know that Anna and Lucretia were from Kanawha County, it stands to reason they all lived there at one point.

1840 census Shows Charles living in a home with one female between the ages of 15-20, one male child under the age of 5 and one male (himself) aged between 30-40 in Kanawha County, Virginia.

The 1850 US Census records show the family living in Gilmer County. They now have 5 children between the ages of 10-2 years old. Also living with them is a Margaret Nichols, Lucretia's mother.

In the 1860 census they are living in Calhoun County. Margaret is still residing with them and although they now have 3 more children, only 7 are living at home. This census also lists the counties everyone in the household was born in. It says that Charles was born in Harrison County, and Lucretia born in Wood. Harriet and John are listed born in Kanawah County. William, Solomon and James born in Gilmer County. Nancy and George in Calhoun.

1870 living in Calhoun County, 6 children living in the home. Margaret Nichols no longer there.

The 1880 census will be the last census we can locate them in. The two youngest boys are still living at home with their parents in Calhoun County.

I know it appears as if the family moved quite a bit during this time span. But the truth is, they might not have moved at all. The county of Kanawah was created out of parts of Greenbriar and Montgomery Counties in 1789. In 1845, the lines of Lewis and Kanawah counties were redrawn to create Gilmer County. In a few short years they redraw the lines of Gilmer County again, to create Calhoun County out of half of it.  So, they may have just owned a plot of land that was included in those county changes.

I have read that Charles died in a buggy accident in 1881 in Calhoun County. But I have not found a record of that. I have not found record of Lucretia's death or burial either at this time. A probable death record for Lucretia has shown up, but it is unclear if this is her.

Children of Charles and Lucretia:

1. Harrison birth about 1840. And died in October of 1855. In his death record he is named Harmon (age 15), and has died within days of his baby brother Lemuel, who is only 3 (shown next line down)

3. William Arnold (1848- Unk)

William Thomas Arnold was the son of Charles D. Arnold and Lucretia Nichols. He was born about 1848 in Calhoun County, West Virginia. He married Sarah Angeline Siers in Braxton County as states the marriage record on file.

Sarah Angeline was the daughter of Isaac Siers and Isabel Rollyson. Sarah Angeline can be found in her father's home in Braxton County before marrying William in 1870, and according to census records, was born after August 24 and before September 21, 1848. 

The first census record William and Sarah Angeline are found in together is the 1880 US Census record for Clay County in the Otter District. In this record, we are shown they have 5 Children at this time. William is a farmer.

In the 1900 Census Records for Clay County, Otter District, we are shown William is still listed as a farmer, and he owns his farm free of any mortgage. This record also gives us some birth months and years to work from with the family. William is listed as born in December 1845 and Sarah as May 1849. 

Moving into 1910, the family is still pretty settled in Otter District. The two youngest boys  being the only children still at home. Samuel is already a teacher in public school and Burton is a farm laborer. 

William and Sarah Angeline had 9 children. Thus far, I have found and confirmed these as siblings to Samuel Martin:

• Minnora born 25 Sept 1871 in Clay County. Married Charles Dexter Jones in Clay County 1895.
• Thomas Ward born 11 March 1873 in Clay county. Married Margaret Lyons on July 20, 1905 in Clay County. He died a widow on Jan 1, 1947 in Clay County, West Virginia He is buried in Arnold Cemetery.
• Paulina born in Clay County, WV March 3, 1875. She married J. W. Tucker in April of 1895 in Clay County. She passed away in 1937 in Nebo.
• Matilda born about 1876. 
• Lucretia married William A Jarvis, and died in 1959 in Roane County. Here is her death certificate 
• Charles W married Blanche Grogg on 2 Oct 1906 according to marriage records in Clay County. They and some of their children are buried in Arnold Cemetery in Clay County.
• Pruda J birth record 6 August 1884
• Burton birth record 6 June 1890 Marriage records state he married Miss Alma Hall in Braxton County Died in Kanawah County. According to his death certificate, he was a retired carpenter.

I believe William and Sarah Angeline are both buried here in the Arnold Cemetery located in Clay County, West Virginia. The dates are unknown for these two markers, so I can not with full authority say that this is the William and Angeline we are looking for. I can not find any records fitting our couple after the 1910 census. It appears between 1910-1920 they passed away.

1. Eston Wyatt Arnold (1916-1976)

Eston Wyatt Arnold was the son of Samuel Martin and Nora Fulks. He was born in Otter District, Clay County, West Virginia on the 20th of June, 1916. A birth record for him is unavailable at this time. He is found in his father's house in the 1920, 1930, and 1940 US Census collections.They resided in Clay County.

In 1946 he married Opal Kathyrn Greathouse in Summit County, Ohio. It was the 9th of March, Opal was the daughter of Thomas Greathouse and Nettie Jarvis. She was born in Boyd County, Ky on the 13th of December 1919.

Not much is known of Eston's life. He has a military career, an at the time of composition, his military records have not been received. Once a full account has been rendered, the addition will be added. There was at least one child born to this union, who is alive.

There was a disconnect in the marriage, because Opal married again on October 10, 1959 to Holton Vere Weaver. Holton passed away in 1974. She died on March 21 1998 in Canton, Stark County, Ohio. And is buried in Sand Ridge Cemetery in Calhoun County, West Virginia, along with Holton.

Records of Eston's death in Massillon, Ohio (1976) provide a proper birth date. Here he is found in the SSDI, and here is his Death certificate. Eston is buried in Forest Hill Cemetery in Canton, Stark County, Ohio

2. Samuel Martin Arnold (1887--1952)

Samuel Martin was born in Floe, Clay County, West Virginia on June 20, 1887, or so says his birth certificate. His parents are William Arnold and Sarah Angeline Siers. At the time of his birth, Samuel's parents were in their 40's. He was one of 8 children. His father was a carpenter and a farmer.According to this record he was born in Wallnut, West Virginia and Angeline was born in Elmira.

He married Nora Fulks on January 8, 1911, in the home of her father in Clay County, West Virginia. She was born November 9, 1895 in Lower District, Braxton County, West Virginia. Her father's name was Henry William Fulks, and her mother was Lydia Downey.

They are found in the 1920 US Census Samuel and Nora are living in Otter, Clay, West Virginia. At this time his profession is a teacher and they have two children. Wilma M and Eston W.

There are four children in the 1930 Census Wilma, Eston, Darius and Esculine ("Tootsie") Samuel is still a Teacher, and in this record it specifies he works in a public school.

Samuel is no longer a teacher when we find him in the 1940 Census Records, he now lists his profession as a Farmer. Also listed as holding careers in farming are both sons, who are still at home. "Tootsie" is listed as a Housekeeper, as is Nora. The only one not living at home at this time is Wilma, Who had been married in 1931, to Vere Witt.

No more information can be found for Tootsie at this time. Darius married at least once, in 1956 to Minnie Knight in Roane County. But an earlier record  indicates he may have been married 11 years before in Calhoun County.

In 1962 a widowed Nora passed away in Roane County, West Virginia. She was laid to rest in Nebo Baptist Church Cemetery Samuel had already passed away on Feburary 7, 1952. He was buried in a small (13 plot) cemetery in Clay County, known as Arnold Cemetery.
