3a. Simon Arnold (1862-1951)

Simon Arnold was a brother to William Arnold, sons of Charles and Lucretia. He was born 12 May 1862 in Gilmer County, before the line was redrawn into Calhoun County. On April 29, 1888 he married the daughter of Robert and Sarah Hall, Elizabeth Jane in Calhoun County. Her sister, Lucinda married Simon's brother George. Simon and Elizabeth had at least 4 sons, and she died, before 1899. Simon remarries Nancy Jane Ellison, daughter of Nathan Ellison and widow to Manuel Ellison, in July of 1899.

In June of 1900, during the census, we find them in Washington District, Calhoun County, West Virginia. This record states that Nancy has given birth to 2 children and 2 are surviving. Losie is the first child born after the marriage to Simon, so she would be the second child. There is a birth record for an Edna Elleson in Calhoun County in 1895. But she is not in the home with her mother. (I believe she is living here with her maternal grandparents and answering to the name Stella.) Nancy and Simon are neighbors to Simon's sister and brother in law,  Nancy and Isaac Siers.

1910 Census Says that Nancy has given birth to 5 children and 5 are alive. There are 7 children in the house (the 2 youngest, Opal {1911} and Geraldine {1914} have not been born yet.) On the records for the 4 oldest boys (Charles, Robert, Leslie and Wood) they state their mother as "Jane Hall" (Elizabeth Jane.) That leaves 3 children in the home born to Nancy (Losie, Nathan, and Everett) plus the daughter she had with Manuel (who I can not find in this census record) gives us 4 children total. Who and where is this extra child? Is it an enumerator mistake?

1920 Census again, Nancy and Isaac are found as neighbors. They are still owning and operating a farm at this time. Opal and Geraldine are listed on this census.

1930 Census Living still in Calhoun County, with Everett, Opal, and Geraldine at home. Also in the home are 2 grandchildren, they are enumerated as Arnolds, but are Bailey children. They are children of Losie who died in 1929, most likely as a complication to childbirth, as if you look on the record, the line under hers is for a son, Bernard Jr. He was 3 months and 5 days old. Gladys and Chesley Bailey were raised by their grandparents after their mother's death.

1940 Census with the same children living in the home.

According to his death certificate, Simon died in December 1951, Nancy died in Nov 1958 in Wood County.
